There are so many products and ingredients out there that it can become overwhelming when trying to find the right products for your skin. Some promise to offer great results, while others just simply have great marketing. The instagram influencers that you follow may claim to have found the cure to anti ageing in a bottle; but can we trust that or is there an ulterior motive in them saying so?! I have spent and wasted so much money on products that claim to work wonders with the promise of overnight results, for them to be yet another item left at the back of the vanity cabinet; I have a feeling that I’m not the only one.
Everyone’s skin is different, so one product that may work for your friend may not be as great for you. That‘s why its so important to have guidance from a skin care professional to ensure that you‘re following the right home care routine, as well as having the confidence that the product that you’ve been recommended will do what it claims to be capable of!
What does cosmeceutical mean?
Cosmeceutical is a mixture between medical and cosmetic products. These products are formulated to maintain skin health and penetrate to the lowest levels of the skin to treat any skin concerns from anti ageing, acne, pigmentation, sensitivity etc. These products and their results have to be scientifically proven to be given the cosmeceutical title.
Most cosmeceutical brands can only be found in a skin care clinic or Medispa, and rightly so! These brands care about their customer’s experience and with a professional in skin care to recommend the best products, they’ll be sure to be in good, and more importantly, safe hands. Everyone’s skin is different, so factors such as skin type, concern and condition are taken into account when a home care routine is being tailored. As these products contain ingredients that have the power to change your skin, uninformed use could lead to adverse reactions or no change at all.
Although some cosmeceutical products can be more expensive than over the counter products, they really are better value for what they can offer!
What about the over the counter products in stores?
These prouducts may have one or two of the ingredients that you‘re looking for, but if it‘s not offered in a potent form with the right amounts of active ingredients then it’s not going to give the results that you might hope for. A lot of over the counter brands will aim their marketing on the fact that it contains Hyaluronic Acid; but just how much of this ingredient is in the formulation, in what form and is this only ingredient in the bottle?!
Unlike cosmeceutical grade products, over the counter products can be purchased without consultation or advice, so why might this be? These products won’t create a change in the skin, so consumers aren’t at risk of adverse reactions if they’re being used incorrectly.
This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t use over-the-counter products at all. These products won‘t optimise skin health but can be convenient, cheaper, and ideal for those who do not struggle day to day with unwanted skin concerns. They are designed to suit anyone within a general skin type, (oily, dry, or combination),and are more easily available compared to cosmeceuticals.
With the help from a professional, an investment into a good skin care routine for your skin will be the best money you’ve ever spent. Having healthy skin is simply a necessity and if you do have a specific concern or concerns, you’ll see the results first hand and have the confidence that you‘re on the right path.
